Central Park Historic District Neighborhood

 The Queen Anne Style

Typically, earlier  Queen Anne Style homes are recognized by their asymmetrical foot prints and romantic, often whimsical, flourishes in their  architectural details.  Embellishments like circular towers emerging from the roof line, and elaborate wrap-a-round porches are common. The porches  with numerous finely turned columns  also show an apparent obsession with brackets and filigree spindle work. The Central Park Historic District in Hannibal, Missouri has some notable examples of this highly detailed type of Queen Anne style home.

The interiors of these fine homes  were also  embellished  with beautiful  woodwork that was readily available due to the machines and power of Industrial Age. Like the exterior the interiors are exquisitely detailed.   Decorated with fine woodwork, elegant staircases and beautifully detailed mantels the interiors delight the eye.

Like its more elaborately detailed neighbors this house has an asymmetrical  footprint, but there is no tower. Old House Journal devoted an issue to this more plain type of Queen Anne dubbing it the Princess Anne.   The more austere façade appeals to modern taste in its simplicity, and it undoubtedly requires less maintenance.

The elegant staircase, mantel, pocket doors and detailed moldings still gleam in their original finishes.
