Live and work in this spectacular space now housing a studio, fabulous gallery and luxury apartment in a converted historic 1868 church. The city of Louisiana is one of the most beautiful and historic Mississippi River towns in Missouri. Step away from the stress of big city life and concentrate on your art or in-home business. This simple but elegant brick and stone Gothic style church's first transformation was into the Louisiana's City Hall in 1919. It served the city until 1999. Although in the transformation the church lost its bell tower, the original two story Gothic arched windows remain. The choir loft and lobby housed city offices, the sanctuary became a community meeting room. The city jail and fire station occupied the lower level for a number of years.
Come in for a tour ( click on photos to enlarge) The front steps lead to the new entrance doors.
The lobby: (14’X15’) The lobby opens from the front doors; it has original woodwork and the original staircase to the choir loft. This beautiful light filled space has new double wide insulated exterior doors and upscale tile floors. A door in one corner opens to a convenient half bath.
The other door opens to the large studio space. The studio: (two rooms 18’X19.5’ and 13.5’X19.5’) consists of two large light filled single story rooms that open to each other with ample space for art projects. It could be converted to a large kitchen/ dining room, a ground floor master suite, or offices. The possibilities for this generous light filled space are endless.
Beautiful new, insulated glass, French doors open to a space that can only be described in words like incredible, magnificent, and awe-inspiring.
The Gallery/ Great Room: The 38’ by 41’ gallery with its 25-foot ceiling, a recessed 8’X10’ raised stage, an early chandelier, a magnificent pressed tin ceiling trimmed in elaborate tin molding glows with light from the impressive 15’ tall arched windows outlined in colored glass. A previous owner rented out this space for weddings; it would make an impressive great room.
The loft apartment: The former choir loft houses a generous living space accessed from the original staircase in the lobby. The loft living space houses a full bath (9’X9.5’)
a bedroom (15’8”X9’3”)
a large living room(18’8”X19’7”)
and a convenient kitchen (9’X9.5’). Shown in its previous color scheme and before new ceramic tile floors.
A wall of glass the entire length of the loft allows a spectacular view of the gallery area. The contrast in the transition from the cozy living space to the view of the incredible volume of the light filled gallery is breathtaking.
The Lower level: this area has many possibilities. The previous owner created a convenient wide staircase that leads from the gallery/ great room to the lower level space that once housed the city fire department and jail. The 50foot long garage used to hold the city's only fire truck.
Bedroom 1: The first room is a generous 18’ X 34’ space that currently holds a guest bedroom. It has a large walk in closet. Its masonry walls, beamed ceiling and exposed structural beams give it a loft like ambiance. It has a door to the street and could be converted to office space or a multitude of uses.
Bedroom 2: 11’4” X 20’9” This space, once the city jail, currently serving as a guest room has a walk-in closet. This now cheerful and bright interesting space with masonry walls retains the barred window that provided the long ago unfortunate occupants with air and light.
The Bath: (11’ 4” X 9’). Also on the lower level is a large half bath that has the plumbing in place with room for a separate tub and shower for your guests.
The Garage: The 15 X 50’ bay was used to park the city fire trucks. It has an oversized garage door and a drain for the meticulous car owner for car washing. There would be ample room to park several cars end to end, or use as a garage and workshop.
On the left side of this bay is a 7.5’ X 7.5’ masonry walled room that is lined with shelves. It would make a perfect space to lock up valuable tools, or with its walls of shelves, it could be converted to your private wine cellar. The Exterior spaces The garden is landscaped with low maintenance perennials that provide color, blooms and texture throughout the year.

The Neighborhood--our property shares the block with the imposing Greek Revival style Masonic Hall. The new fire station is located across from the garage entrance.
